Why 'Mindset' is Just Another Buzzword – And Why Writing is the Real Game Changer
Forget the buzzwords—it's time to take action. Here's why writing is the foundation for everything.
A lot of people talk about “mindset” from gurus to people like me typing their original thoughts online.
I despise buzzwords. If it’s a buzzword, it’s someone else’s idea.
Mindset is one of those words that is never quite clear and certainly not tangible. It’s just this non-descript thing. Successful people have a good one, and other people have a bad, wrong, or negative one.
I get it.
I’m Gen X. Growing up, I don’t recall ever hearing the word, mindset. Instead it was “You can do anything your put your mind to.”
Same thing.
The Bible talks about this as well:
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. ~Colossians 3:2
Same thing.
I understand. Mindset is a thing, but do we have to talk about it so much? You can have all the mindset in the world, and still not be doing anything.
Because everyone talks about mindset without ever really defining it, no one knows if they’re actually doing it right.
If I have doubts, is my mindset out the window even if I’m doing stuff?
Mindset talk is a distraction. Let’s turn some nouns into verbs!
Trust yourself. Trust the mind that God gave you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made!
I’m taking simple steps.
I’m writing! I write in several places and all they serve a different purpose. And when I’m not writing, I’m still writing.
Let me explain.
I write first thing in the morning in my paper journal just chronicling my days.
I write on my desk notepad in pencil because I like how it feels.
I write in my notebook when I’m learning something new so I can refer back to my notes.
I write original thoughts on X about writing and building a following. I start these off in a spreadsheet. Why?
I am a firm believer in letting writing rest…overnight at minimum. I write nearly all these emails at least a day in advance. That final read before the send is often fruitful in spotting areas where I was too wordy, typos, or places I need to clarify.I write here on Substack. Y’all know all about that. If I have thought I wrote on X that hits, I will expound on it here.
I write in my Day One journal which is an app. I discovered it thought iPad first and added it to all my devices. I use it mostly to process feelings, emotions, and things I don’t understand.
I write emails.
I write on Discord.
I write in the game I play.
Writing is the base for everything I do. Writing is the base of everything humans do.
Start writing.
Write about everything.
Share the thoughts that convey who you are. Let’s support each other on X.
Amen! Mindset truly is a nebulous term tossed around. Of course, I think you and I have always been in agreement in this area. Great read!
