Hey, y’all! Stick around ‘til the end and I’ll give you a mini preview of my brainstorm session and what’s to come here on my lil Substack.
I almost lost a job once for refusing to set goals…foolish thing that I was.
In my defense, there were some things I didn’t know at the time:
Settings goals means you will accomplish more
My boss and co-workers would become my surrogate family
My boss wasn’t trying to overstep the work/life balance
Deciding to participate in that goals program changed my life.
I wish I could say that I’ve set goals consistently ever since, but that would be dishonest. I can say that I have always come back to goal-setting when I hit a brick wall and it works every time.
Weekly Goals are Weak
Most recently, I was setting weekly goals. Each week on Monday, I would write what I wanted to accomplish that week.
Some weeks went swimmingly, but most were detrimental failures.
Honestly, I’m not sure how I managed to stay afloat financially the last 4 years that I helped care for my elderly parents. It was by the grace of God only.
Since my Dad passed in October and I’ve been able to lay claim to much more of my time, I wasn’t doing much better in the beginning.
Those weekly goals are weak and what I would find myself doing is procrastinating on way too much until it was all piled on at the end of the week.
There I’d be trying to cram a week’s worth of work into a few hours on Friday. My life was a wreck, my money was in shambles, and something had to change.
Daily Goals are Determined Goals
I’m not sure what made me do this, but 2 weeks ago today, I decided to break up my weekly goals into daily ones.
Week 1 was great! I finished up the week with more hours than I’d worked in YEARS and I was done by 11am on Friday!
Week 2 was similar.
Being able to check off goals on a daily basis and seeing my progress and hours grow is motivating.
I’ve been dealing with some pretty severe burnout for a couple of years now, and this is kicking it in the teeth!
Having daily determined goals that back up my weekly goals means more of my goals get accomplished.
So if you’re on the fence about what kind of goals to set when, do both!
What’s Coming to Write Now
A few weeks back, I brainstormed some content ideas for this Substack. You’ve just read one of them. Here’s a bit more of what you can expect from me in the coming weeks:
Writing as a Spontaneous Act
Beating Burnout
Will I Monetize My Substack?
Last One on the Bandwagon
Laughter is Medicine
A Series on cool people I’ve found creating online over the years starting with Julian Baumgartner of Baumgartner Restoration.
I hope some, if not all, of that sounds interesting. I love hearing from you all in comments and seeing your likes on these posts. Thanks for being here!
